Spill the Beans

Meaning: To reveal a secret, often by accident or too early.

Why Do We Say "Spill the Beans"? If someone says, "Don't spill the beans!" they mean "Don't reveal the secret!" But have you ever wondered where this phrase comes from? One theory traces it back to ancient Greece, where people voted using beans—white for "yes" and black for "no." If someone accidentally knocked over the jar before voting was finished, the secret results would be revealed. That's why spilling the beans means revealing something too soon!

How to use it

It’s informal and friendly, common in conversation, texting and entertainment news. People often use it playfully to ask for gossip: “Come on, spill the beans.” Younger speakers also say just “spill” or “spill the tea” with a similar meaning.

Examples

A common mistake

Say spill the beans, with “the” and plural “beans,” not “spill a bean” or “spill the bean.” It’s casual, so in a formal email say “reveal” or “share” instead.

Where it comes from

No one knows for sure. The popular story about ancient Greeks voting with beans has no real evidence behind it. The phrase is first recorded in the United States in the early 1900s, and “spill” had meant letting information out long before that.
